What’s Under the Hood?
The Highlander was refreshed in 2023 to lose two of its cylinders for a new I-4 powertrain. However, there are still two options:
Standard Engine:
- 2.4 I-4 Turbo with 265 hp and 310 lb.ft
- 8-Speed Automatic
- FWD or AWD
Hybrid:
- 2.5L I-4 + 2 electric motors and battery: 243 hp (total system)
- FWD or AWD
- eCVT
AWD is optional on all Highlander models. Most gas models of the Highlander are rated as follows:
FWD: 22/29/25 MPG (some versions are 24 combined)
AWD: 21/28/24 MPG
Hybrid is around 36 MPG combined
