For many people, the only compact SUV they have ever considered buying is the Honda CR-V. That’s why it’s a very big deal when it gets updated, which is what has just happened for its 2026 refresh. But there are always rivals knocking at the door, and one that really stands out is the all-new VW Tiguan. This model has a ton of features and luxury to battle the heavyweight. So, who wins in a 2026 Honda CR-V vs. 2025 Volkswagen Tiguan battle? Well, let’s find out!

Pricing and Equipment

So, first off, let’s discuss pricing for these two popular crossovers.

Starting with the refreshed CR-V, we have the loaded trim, the Sport Touring. The price is increasing again this year to almost $44k.

CR-V (Sport Touring AWD): $42,250 | Options: +$455 | Destination: $1,395 | Total: $44,100

Moving to the Tiguan, it starts and ends a little less expensive. The as-tested price is $41,180.

Tiguan (SEL R-Line AWD): $39,755 | Options: +$0 | Destination: $1,425 | Total: $41,180

Exterior Design

So, let’s go ahead and address the elephant in the room right from the start here: the refreshed CR-V visually doesn’t change much at all. Hundreds of thousands of people are fond of the fairly simple black grille and lower facia triangular accents. The new Tiguan is more of a departure from the previous generation, with a much larger grille that emphasizes a more aggressive stance.

As far as lighting, the Honda uses reflector LED headlights, while the VW uses projector LED headlights with adaptive abilities and a light bar across the front. Neither have fog lamps.

Continuing to the sides, the models are only 0.4-inches apart in overall length, and the Tiguan has the option for a two-tone black roof.

Length: 184.4-inches (Tiguan) | 184.8-inches (CRV)

Make sure to stay tuned to see how the interior measurements stack up later in this comparison, but as far as how the wheel sizes stack up, the VW has the advantage. They went for a 20-inch alloy while most in the segment, including the CR-V, top out at 19’s. We will also be discussing ride quality later.

Moving out back, we have several differences. For starters, the lighting is fully-LED on the Tiguan whereas the CR-V uses an incandescent turn signal. Both wipers are exposed and only the CR-V opted to show the exposed exhaust outlets.

Finally, the VW has the towing advantage.

Towing: 1,800 lbs. (Tiguan) | 1,000 lbs. (CR-V)

Additional Features

Moving on to some other odd and end things, both mirrors have BSM, heating, and LED turn signals, and the VW has power-folding as well.

And speaking of Blind Spot Monitoring, family SUVs need to be safe, and one of the really nice things about these two is that all four of your major active safety features are included as standard. They also have highway assist features.

The warranties are good on both, with the VW having a unified basic and PT warranty. It has the longer basic and shorter powertrain warranty, and VW also gives you an additional year of complimentary maintenance.

More important is the inside, so let’s get to that.

Interior Design

Approaching both SUVs, they have smart entry systems with remote start and their brand’s respective key fobs.

But after opening the doors, you’ll see these two different philosophies.

Before we dig into the features, let’s start with the seats. Both models cover them with real leather and include heating and memory seats. The big differences here are that the Tiguan has the super rare feature of massaging for this segment, as well as ventilation.

Now once inside the cabins, let’s check out the major point category of material quality. The CR-V has never wanted to be too flashy and that continues for 2026. The Tiguan, on the other hand, jumps up to a whole new level for the new generation to become one of the very best in the class. It has real walnut wood trim and lots of leatherette trim throughout.

After startup, you’ll see digital screens that act as gauge clusters on both. They both have nice-enough graphics and are about 10-inches in size. The VW further includes a head-up display, which is something the CR-V has not added.

Moving back, they both have heated, leather-wrapped steering wheels and even rain-sensing wipers as equipped.

Storage and Technology

Now it’s time to evaluate another major interior section: storage. Both have done an excellent job, but the CR-V might be impossible to beat. It has the largest center console in the class and tremendous storage in all the areas forward of that.

CR-V keeps its storage advantage despite using a traditional shifter. Preference on that is personal but note that the CR-V does not offer a 360-degree camera like most options in the class, including Tiguan.

Next, we have the automatic climate controls. For the easiest adjustment, Honda has physical knobs for temperature and other settings, while VW is the opposite and put everything into the screen and touch sliders below it. The CR-V’s controls are easier to use without distraction, but the VW has an extra zone of adjustment for the rear passengers.

Related to that, while VW kept the audio volume slider next to the climate controls, they also added in a physical volume knob this year. This button on the console is like a little smart watch because you can change ambient lighting modes and drive modes as well with it. But as far as audio is concerned, let’s hear a sample. Overall, the richer and more balanced sound quality is delivered by the Harmon Kardon in the Tiguan.

CR-V: 12-speaker Bose audio

Tiguan: 12-speaker Harmon Kardon audio

People want a high level of technology in cars nowadays, so let’s move to the key element of displays. As far as the sizing, the CR-V makes the 9-inch screen standard on all trims now. However, the Tiguan has a massive 15-inch screen on the loaded trim, which is easily one of the largest displays in the entire segment and the graphics are very sharp.

Software-wise, both have highly desirable features like wireless AA and ACP, as well as built-in navigation.

As we wrap up the front of the cabins, both have auto-dimming mirrors and only the VW offers a large panoramic moonroof.

Rear Seats and Cargo

Features are very important, don’t get me wrong, but a great compact SUV must nail the fundamentals such as having spacious back seats, as well. The CR-V has long been one of the absolutely biggest options in the class, and while it remains on top, options like this Tiguan are catching up. As you can see, the difference between the two of them is well below the 5% threshold required to score a point.

CR-V: Legroom: 41.0 inches | Headroom: 38.2 inches

Tiguan: Legroom: 40.2 inches | Headroom: 38.4-inches

One big leg up the CR-V maintains is that its seats have 8 levels of recline, which helps the occupants find there most comfortable position.

Additional features on both are USB ports and climate vents, but heated seats are reserved for the Tiguan only.

Now checking out the cargo areas, the CR-V remains a leader in this regard as well. Unfortunately, VW has not yet published official numbers, but with the new model being about 2-inches shorter than the previous generation, we anticipate that the cargo capacity will decline vs. the old model which was already smaller than the CR-V.

Both have hands-free power tailgates but only the Tiguan has a spare tire.

CR-V: Behind 2nd row: 39.3 cubic feet | Max: 76.5 cu.ft

Tiguan: Behind 2nd row: —cu. ft | Maximum: —cu. ft

The drive is a very important part of any SUV, so now let’s take this fight out to the streets!

Powertrains

So, these two have been battling it out for superiority and when it comes to what’s under the hoods, we have some significant differences. The fundamental difference highlighted here is that the CR-V has a mandatory hybrid powertrain on the top trim, producing 204 total system horsepower. Meanwhile, the new Tiguan is not offered with a hybrid, although one is planned in a few years, in addition to a more powerful turbo model. Until then, they feel very similar under acceleration.

Tiguan: 2.0 Turbo I-4: 201 hp | 221 lb.ft

CR-V Hybrid: 2.0L I-4 + Elec: 204 hp | 247 lb. ft.

When it comes to transmissions, the CR-V comes with a transmission that behaves in a similar way as an eCVT, while the VW has an 8-speed automatic. It’s up to your personal preference, but if you like a traditional automatic transmission, the Tiguan is part of a ever-shrinking group that has one in this segment.

Test Drive and Fuel Economy

Besides transmissions, you’re probably wondering how quiet the cabins are when cruising. Well, that’s why here at Car Confections, we take a sound-level reading of every vehicle we test on our channel. Both these models were tested out on press drives in different states so they can’t precisely be compared until we get them back home to Kentucky, nevertheless, here are the results for your reference.

Tiguan: 57.5 dB @ 55 MPH (Montana)

CR-V: 57.8 dB @ 55 MPH (California)

Now let’s talk about an important part for any family SUV, the ride quality. In this area, both impresses, although the CR-V feels a bit more comfortable due to the smaller wheels as equipped. It also strikes an excellent balance between handling, dynamics and comfort, meaning that between the two of them, it’s the CR-V that feels more at home on a back road.

Lastly, if fuel economy is front-of-mind to you then the CR-V, with its available hybrid system, will certainly make more sense. This hybrid system delivers 37 MPG combined, while the Tiguan gets 12 MPG less, at 25 combined. That’s over 30% better fuel economy, which would certainly add up over the ownership period.

Tiguan (2.0T AWD): 22/30/25 MPG

Tucson (Hybrid AWD): 40/34/37 MPG

Reliability, Resale, and Value

In our reviews and comparisons, we are also adding in reliability and resale information to give you a better picture of the overall value beyond just the original MSRP.

Beginning with reliability, we developed the Combined Reliability Index, which takes into account several studies from trustworthy sources, and combines them in a way that gives a more realistic picture. Here, the advantage belongs to Honda, and by a lot. Honda ranks as the one of the top brands for reliability, 14 slots ABOVE the industry average. Meanwhile, Volkswagen is currently the lowest rated brand in the auto industry, with a rating 10 slots below.

We also put Mason’s economics degree to work to develop a detailed Predicted Resale Value tool. After 5 years and 60,000 miles, Honda has the highest predicted resale value in the industry, at 64.9%, and Volkswagen comes in at 51.8%.

Resale is obviously important because it determines how much money you get back, but we can’t forget about the price difference at the original purchase. The CR-V costs $2,465 more than the Tiguan.

I want to emphasize that if money, reliability or resale value matter less to you personally, feel free to disregard these points.
