Exterior Design
Starting with exterior designs, both models are immediately identifiable as a Mazda, but with their own unique personalities. While the CX-50 was likely originally intended to replace the CX-5, Mazda decided to keep both options: the CX-5 with a sporty and sleek appearance, and the CX-50 with a rugged and tough persona. While many elements, like the grilles, are very similar, the finishes are different, especially the use of gloss versus matte black trim.
What we will focus on are the features and differences, starting with the headlights. In typical Mazda fashion, these higher-end models come with projector LED headlamps that are also adaptive.
At the sides, despite the CX-5’s growth spurt for its newest generation, the CX-50 is still just over an inch longer. That doesn’t necessarily mean it’s larger inside, which we’ll discuss later. The CX-5 rides on 19-inch wheels, while the CX-50 uses larger 20-inch wheels and features thicker exterior cladding.

Out back, the CX-5 continues its sleek styling compared to the more rugged CX-50, but both share exposed exhausts, spoilers, rear wipers, and fully LED taillamps with a fading turn-signal effect.

Moving to the mirrors, both feature heating, blind-spot monitoring, and power folding. In terms of active safety, both models include all the expected driver assistance features.
The most significant differences, however, appear once you step inside.
Interior Design
Both crossovers offer smart entry systems and identical key fobs.
Once inside, the cabins share very few similarities. Starting with the seats, both models are finished in real leather and include 10-way power adjustment, heating, ventilation, and memory functionality.
When it comes to build quality, both feel solid and well put together. Material quality is above average for the segment, though the redesigned CX-5 uses more hard-touch plastics than the previous generation, including on the upper door panels.
Once started, the CX-50 features a partially digital 7-inch gauge cluster, while the CX-5 now offers a fully digital 10.25-inch display. Both vehicles include head-up displays.
The steering wheels in both are leather-wrapped and manually adjustable, with intuitive button layouts and rain-sensing wipers. Only the CX-5 includes a heated steering wheel in this configuration.
Storage and Technology
Storage has improved in the redesigned CX-5, with a larger center console than the CX-50. Beyond that, the CX-5’s updated ergonomics allow for more practical front storage, including cupholders that don’t interfere with climate controls. Both vehicles include wireless charging pads.
Each model uses a traditional gear shifter, but only the CX-5 offers a 360-degree camera at this price point.
Climate control systems are dual-zone automatic in both vehicles. However, the CX-5 replaces physical controls with touchscreen-based adjustments, while the CX-50 retains physical climate controls that are easier to use while driving. The CX-50 also retains a physical volume knob.

Rear legroom and headroom measurements are very close on paper, but real-world knee-room favors the CX-5, making it more comfortable for rear passengers.
