Every year, our Car Confections Team gets behind the wheels of hundreds of cars, from every size and price point, to make reviews for the channel. Today, we will be sharing our Best 10 Compact SUVs for 2026, all of which we have spent extensive time with. We have hand-crafted segment specific scores, to help tailor them for each unique buyer. After we share our top rankings, we will also include our “Do Not Buy” model for 2026, as well as what we’d personally park in our driveways. For an in-depth video about each, be sure to check out each linked video, as well as our full rankings at the bottom of this article!
Scoring Criteria
From reading thousands of comments our viewers have left on our channel; we developed a list of the ten most important categories for shoppers looking for a Compact SUV.
We have spent countless hours testing out each of these models, driving them over all types of terrain, testing the technology, sampling the space, and living with them. We then took the time to craft these rankings based off our experience into the following criteria categories.
Of course, consumer priorities do vary, so be sure to sort these categories and weigh them based on what’s most important to you.
#10: Chevy Equinox
The redesigned Chevy Equinox continues to be a pretty well-rounded choice for 2026. The new Equinox pairs eye-catching style with great technology and value, undercutting most of its competitors in the segment when it comes to price. Though less so than its platform mate, the Terrain, the Equinox also has a much nicer cabin than before, though some materials still suffer in comparison. Even more so for 2026, this Equinox is suffering from an underpowered 1.5L Turbo 4-cylinder engine and lacks hybrid powertrain. At least one of these options is necessary to score higher in the segment.
#9: Mazda CX-50
The Mazda CX-50 remains a luxurious enthusiast option within a sometimes-bland segment. Despite offering three powertrains, including a hybrid now, each CX-50 possesses the great driving dynamics you’d expect from a Mazda. In the cabin itself, the CX-50 also brings a lot to the table, including lots of luxurious materials in lieu of the plastics many of its rivals have. Unfortunately, the CX-50 loses a lot of ground when it comes to space and cabin ergonomics, something we wish Mazda would update to combine with its agile driving character.
Please note for 2026, the CX-50 is scored separately from its CX-5 sibling, as the all-new 2026 CX-5 will be significantly different. CX-5 will have late availability, meaning it cannot be scored this year.
#8: Subaru Forester
The all-new Subaru Forester made its mark last year and continues to add more for 2026. This model adopted a new luxurious look on both the inside and outside last year and has now added a new hybrid system, using some help from Toyota. No matter the engine you choose though, it maintains the perks of a Subaru, such as Symmetrical AWD, better than average ground clearance, and lots of standard safety systems. While the new hybrid system and updated Wilderness model did help up the Forester’s offerings this year, the technology in this cabin is aging poorly. While the newly available digital gauge cluster is a step in the right direction, we wish Subie would revamp the Forester’s cabin like the new Outback, which sports a new screen and better software.
#7: Honda CR-V
The Honda CR-V received a refresh for 2026, bringing some mild updates to one of the most popular picks in this segment. While its changes aren’t earth shattering, the CR-V remains a strong option in terms of reliability, resale, efficiency, and being one of the largest options in the segment. Driving wise, it’s also quite comfortable, yet sporty, combining Mazda-like driving characteristics with Toyota-like ride quality, all packaged with lots of safety systems. Unfortunately, the CR-V lost ground this year with its refresh, as Honda still refuses to add a larger screen and equivalent luxury features on upper trims that many of its rivals have.
#6: Mitsubishi OUtlander
The Mitsubishi Outlander remains an underrated option in the segment, which offers a surprising amount of style and luxury. Though Mitsubishi has seen brighter days, the Outlander is still their best-selling product, offering some of the best luxury and value in this segment. The Outlander also has some surprises up its sleeve, including a PHEV model and a third row, though very small. Despite being packed with bells and whistles, the Outlander struggles in terms of overall reliability, resale, and value, all which are important factors of consideration for a family. We wish Mitsubishi would position the Outlander as a better value option within the segment.

#5: Nissan Rogue
Perhaps one of the most underrated options in the segment is the Nissan Rogue! We always enjoy our time in the Rogue, as it is one of the most comfortable models in this segment, offering many luxury features for the price. For passenger comfort, the Rogue has one of the best equipped rear seats in the segment, offering more features and comfort. While Nissan has added a Plug-in Hybrid variant for 2026, its features and value quotient are a far cry from the Turbo 3-cylinder gas model, as it’s more last-gen Mitsubishi Outlander than Nissan Rogue.
#4: Volkswagen Tiguan
While we don’t award an official “Most Improved” award to any specific model, this new 2026 Volkswagen Tiguan is surely this year’s recipient. Now including its Audi-powered Turbo model, this VW comes out swinging for 2026. Highlights of this model include its style, value, and interior luxury, which includes features like massaging seats and class-leading ambient lighting. This new Tiguan really goes back to the heart of VW, offering Audi-like luxury for an affordable price within the segment. For its downsides, Volkswagen still suffers in terms of resale and reliability, and we’d love to see a hybrid powertrain debut sooner rather than later.
#3: Toyota RAV4
Still the best-seller of the segment, the all-new 2026 Toyota RAV4 is finally here and we’ve had the chance to test out many of its different trim levels. For 2026, the RAV4 solves many of its previous downfalls, including new tech, more features, and a more exciting design this year. It also continues to be the fuel economy leader and historically reliable option, something Toyota continues to build its reputation on. Despite its leaps in terms of tech, the RAV4 fails to score any higher due to its decline in cabin materials from the previous generation and it’s higher price, making it one of the most expensive options in the class. We wish Toyota would reposition the pricing of the RAV4 within the segment.
#2: Hyundai Tucson
The Hyundai Tucson continues to be a strong competitor for 2026! In addition to having some of the best technology in the segment, the Tucson once again has many options to choose from, with gas, hybrid, PHEV, sport, luxury, and off-road trims. As compared to the Toyota, many of the Tucson models can be had for a value-packed price, less than most of the competition. The Tucson is also one of the largest in terms of rear seats and cargo, rivaling the numbers of the also large CR-V. While not where it used to be, we hope Hyundai will continue to grow their brand perception and reliability ratings.
#1: Kia Sportage
Collectively looking at our objective categories, the refreshed Kia Sportage ousts its sibling, the Hyundai Tucson, for the number one spot this year! Once again equivalent with the Tucson in terms of offering, the Sportage still manages to do so at a more attractive price point, offering some of the best value in the segment. It also offers better features than almost every entrant, adding things like a head-up display and more for 2026. We appreciate that the Kia also has a variety of different trims, engines, and styles buyers can choose from. Especially with Kia’s big improvements in reliability ratings over the last few years, the Sportage is one of the most well-rounded picks in this competitive segment, securing the win for 2026!
Our “DO Not Buy” Pick for 2026: Ford Bronco Sport
The compact crossover segment is not only crowded with many entries, but is also ultra-competitive, commanding the best of the best from every automaker. While recently refreshed, the Bronco Sport is still the lowest scoring option this year. While the Bronco Sport might be the right fit for a certain rugged-minded buyer, it doesn’t check many of the boxes for the typical buyer in this segment, falling short on cabin luxury, technology, and value for the money. It also doesn’t offer a hybrid engine, further limiting this option for efficiency-minded buyers. With the Ford Escape on its way out of production, we hope Ford will further elevate this offering in future years.

Close Calls for a Highly Competitive segment!
As you can see, the point values over these categories create many close calls, so you really can’t go wrong with any of these choices. As far as our personal picks, Drew leans towards the enthusiast and luxury Mazda CX-50, while Mason and Josh prefer the massively improved Volkswagen Tiguan this year. Many competitors in this segment truly puts their best foot forward!
